"If a path to the better there be, it begins with a full look at the worst."
Thomas Hardy, 1887

End of SuburbiaAs we enter the new millennium, serious questions are being raised about the sustainability of the suburban model. The End of Suburbia is a documentary that explores suburbia and its rather bleak prospects as fossil fuel demand begins to outstrip supply. Some scientists and policy makers argue that the inevitable decline in availability of fossil fuels is upon us presently...

Although the documentary is focussed on North American suburbia, it has applicability to many of South Africa's sprawling middle-class suburbs and the South African suburban way of life. Might we actually be bumping up against the Limits to Growth that the Club of Rome cautioned about in 1972? This documentary puts forward a very compelling case that we may well be with dire consequences for the global economy in the coming years.

It is critical viewing and the DVD or video can be ordered from the following website: The End of Suburbia. The producers of The End of Suburbia advocate the showing of the documentary to audiences of under 50 persons without needing their permission.
