Permaculture in Ghana

ImageI recently spent some time in Ghana where the primary focus of my trip was to do a Permaculture Design Course. The short definition of Permaculture (a contraction between the words "permanent" and "agriculture") is...

Cape Town's 'brown haze'

Brown HazeCape Town, as scenic as it is, has a rather nasty side to it when the wind doesn't blow. This usually happens in the winter months, in-between the frequent cold fronts that move in from the south pole bringing with them northwesterly winds and rain. These 'in-between' days are idyllic; blue skies, temperatures approaching 30° C and, something which is rare in this coastal city, no wind. But this is as much a curse as it is a blessing...

Ecological Footprint

According to my ecological footprint calculation at Earthday.Net, if everyone on this planet were to to live the equivalent lifestyle to me, we would need 2.4 planet Earths to sustain us all.

My personal footprint takes up 4.3 hectares which coincides with that of the average South African. It should be noted however that South Africa is one the most unequal societies in the world (along with Brazil) with a disproportionately large disparity between the haves and have nots.

To live a supposedly sustainable and ethical lifestyle, my footprint size would have to decrease to 1.8 hectares as that is how many globally productive hectares are available per person at current population levels.

My footprint is made up as such (in hectares):

Food 1.2
Mobility 0.9
Shelter 0.5
Goods and services 1.7
Total footprint: 4.3

My ecological footprint before moving into my ecologically built home at Lynedoch was 6.7 hectares...some improvement, but still a long way to go to one planet living.
